Calgary's Winter Storm Warning: The Risks of Using Hazard Lights

Post by : Mina Rahman

This week, Calgary faced an unexpected winter storm, as fierce winds and drifting snow contributed to perilous driving conditions citywide. Motorists dealt with drastically reduced visibility, icy surfaces, and intense traffic delays, amplifying safety concerns and prompting warnings from authorities and driving experts.

Though the snowfall itself wasn't exceptionally heavy, significant winds topping 80 km/h severely aggravated the situation. Visibility in certain areas diminished to mere feet, hampering drivers' ability to see ahead, read road signs, or recognize any hazards, swiftly transforming city roads and highways into dangerous thoroughfares.

A major concern during this storm was the tendency of drivers to activate their hazard lights amid low visibility conditions. While many believe this makes their vehicles more noticeable, experts argue that using hazard lights can lead to confusion. These lights are meant to signal a vehicle that is stopped or in distress, not to indicate normal driving in inclement weather.

With numerous vehicles employing hazard lights, it becomes increasingly difficult for other drivers to gauge speed, distance, and motion. Additionally, because hazard lights disable turn signals, communicating lane changes or turns becomes nearly impossible, heightening the risk of crashes in stressful weather scenarios.

Police and driving instructors are advising motorists to adopt safer practices. These include reducing speed, extending following distances, using adequate headlights and taillights rather than daytime running lights, and making sure cars are winter-ready. The recommendation for winter tires is particularly emphasized, as they offer enhanced grip and maneuverability on slippery roads.

Experts also advise that the safest approach during severe weather is often to refrain from traveling entirely. Should conditions deteriorate quickly, drivers should seek a secure spot to pull over and wait for the storm to pass, as winter weather can rapidly shift.

As fatal traffic incidents rise this year, officials remind Calgarians that winter driving requires patience, readiness, and vigilance. Slowing down, ensuring proper lighting, and avoiding non-essential trips are key actions that can help prevent accidents and maintain safety on the roads during unpredictable winter storms.
