Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin is preparing for a major milestone in space exploration as its second New Glenn rocket rolls out to the launch pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The launch will carry NASA’s highly anticipated ESCAPADE twin probes toward Mars.
Standing 320 feet tall, the New Glenn rocket will make its second flight after a successful debut orbital test in January. The mission, scheduled for late October or early November, aims to achieve a first for Blue Origin: flying an interplanetary mission while attempting to recover its reusable first stage, “Never Tell Me the Odds,” by landing it on the company’s Jacklyn drone ship. Previous landing attempts fell short, but improvements have increased optimism.
NASA’s ESCAPADE (Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers) mission includes two identical spacecraft named Blue and Gold, built by Rocket Lab. These orbiters will study how sunlight and solar wind affect Mars’ atmosphere—a crucial step in understanding the planet’s habitability and challenges for future human missions. The probes arrived at Florida’s Space Coast in late September and are undergoing final preparations before integration with New Glenn.
This launch is significant for both Blue Origin and NASA. A successful mission would confirm New Glenn as a major competitor in the commercial heavy-lift sector and pave the way for more Mars-bound private missions.
With the rocket on the pad and ESCAPADE nearly ready, space enthusiasts in Florida and across the Middle East are eagerly anticipating a historic countdown to Mars.
