In a heartfelt tribute, hundreds of thousands gathered in Dhaka on Wednesday to honor the late former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, whose passing has profoundly affected Bangladesh's political landscape.
Khaleda Zia, hailed as the first female prime minister of Bangladesh, passed away on Tuesday at 80 after a prolonged illness. Her funeral procession saw streets near the parliament complex crowded with supporters, as a hearse adorned with the national flag carried her through the capital.
Mourners lined the streets, praying and holding flags with her likeness, as the nation observed mourning with flags at half-mast and extensive security measures in place for the funeral.
Setara Sultana, a loyal supporter of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, expressed her sentiments: “I traveled a long way just to say goodbye to her. Just seeing the vehicle with her body was significant for me.”
Sharmina Siraj, a mother of two, lauded Zia as an inspiration for women, highlighting the educational initiatives introduced during her tenure that positively influenced her daughters' futures. She emphasized Zia’s enduring impact on women's empowerment.
Earlier that day, Zia's body was taken to the residence of her son Tarique Rahman, where he was seen reciting Quranic verses in her office. Numerous dignitaries and regional leaders attended the funeral, showcasing Zia’s significant influence beyond national borders.
Zia's political journey was noteworthy; she stepped into public service following her husband, President Ziaur Rahman's assassination in 1981, eventually rising to lead the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and serving two terms as prime minister, in 1991 and again in 2001.
A staunch advocate against military rule, Zia faced numerous arrests and political hurdles while fighting for democratic reforms. Alongside her rival Sheikh Hasina, she significantly shaped Bangladesh’s modern political narrative.
Despite her declining health and legal troubles in her later years, Zia remained a potent symbol of resistance for her followers. Her party had intentions for her to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections in February 2026, despite her health issues.
Khaleda Zia will be laid to rest next to her husband, signaling the end of a pivotal chapter in the country’s political history. The massive turnout at her funeral is a testament to her lasting legacy and the respect she commanded nationwide.
Her son, Tarique Rahman, remarked that the nation has lost a key leader who shaped its democratic path.
