The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is facing strong criticism once again, as national team players have reacted angrily to the reinstatement of a controversial official. The decision comes at a difficult time for Bangladesh cricket, following the team’s removal from the upcoming T20 World Cup.
The BCB recently reinstated M. Najmul Islam as the head of its finance department, only days after removing him from all responsibilities. His return has caused frustration and disappointment among players, many of whom believe the board has ignored their concerns.
A senior player, speaking anonymously, reacted sarcastically to the news, saying it showed how decisions are being made within the board. The comment reflected a wider feeling among players that their voices are not being respected.
Najmul Islam was earlier removed from his role on January 18 after several senior players protested against his remarks. The controversy began when he made harsh comments while defending the board’s decision not to send the team to India for the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns. Following Bangladesh’s refusal to travel, the International Cricket Council (ICC) removed the team from the tournament and replaced it with Scotland.
During the dispute, Najmul stated that players would not be paid if Bangladesh withdrew from the World Cup. He also claimed the team had not earned support because it had failed to win any major ICC events. These comments triggered strong backlash from players and cricket bodies.
The Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) condemned his statements and demanded his removal. The board was forced to issue a show-cause notice and temporarily strip him of duties. However, his reinstatement has now reopened old wounds.
Adding to the controversy, Najmul had earlier labeled former captain Tamim Iqbal an “agent of India” after Tamim called for calm and long-term thinking in handling relations with India. That remark was widely criticized and seen as damaging to team unity and national cricket culture.
Current Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has also spoken out, urging a practical and balanced approach. He revealed that players are under extreme mental pressure due to the ongoing uncertainty and internal conflict.
The repeated controversies have raised serious questions about leadership and decision-making within the BCB. At a time when Bangladesh cricket needs stability, trust, and clear direction, the board’s actions appear to be deepening divisions rather than healing them.
If the situation is not handled carefully, it could harm player morale, public confidence, and the future growth of Bangladesh cricket.
