Boosting Ayutthaya Tourism: A Sustainable Vision

Post by : Shakul

Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports is embarking on a new journey to elevate Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya as a premier sustainable tourism destination. On May 6, 2026, an important gathering was held at the Krungsri River Hotel, chaired by Tourism and Sports Minister Mr. Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, focusing on strategies to boost tourist spending, promote overnight stays, and ensure a fair distribution of tourism income to local communities.

The meeting saw participation from senior officials, tourism leaders, local authorities, and representatives from the tourism sector. Among the attendees were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Ayutthaya Province Governor, and key figures from tourism development agencies. Conversations revolved around crafting a robust tourism model that aligns with contemporary traveler expectations while safeguarding the city’s rich historical and cultural essence.

Minister Surasak highlighted Ayutthaya's selection as the primary site for this nationwide tourism initiative due to its historical relevance and tourism prospects. Despite being one of Thailand’s renowned World Heritage sites, Ayutthaya faces significant tourism challenges that hinder local businesses and economic development.

One pressing issue identified was the overwhelming number of day visitors, with nearly 90 percent leaving Ayutthaya after just a few hours. This short visit results in a relatively low average spending of about 1,800 to 2,000 baht per individual, which falls short of the city's economic potential as a global heritage destination.

In response, tourism leaders and local business groups proposed several initiatives to encourage longer stays and deeper engagement with Ayutthaya’s attractions. A standout proposal is the River Night Lighting project, aiming to illuminate 12 key riverside historical sites with solar-powered lights, creating an enchanting atmosphere for evening tours and river cruises that could captivate both Thai and international visitors.

Also on the agenda was the Global Muay Thai Branding initiative, which seeks to elevate the renowned Wai Kru Muay Thai ceremony to a premier cultural event, attracting athletes and global travelers. This initiative is poised to enhance Thailand’s cultural identity and solidify Ayutthaya’s appeal.

Discussions also emphasized harnessing modern tourism technology and inclusive travel development. Plans for a Smart Tourism and Data Center were introduced to analyze visitor behavior and refine tourism planning with precise data. Simultaneously, upgrades in infrastructure and universal design are being prioritized to accommodate seniors, individuals with disabilities, and affluent international travelers seeking accessible and comfortable adventures.

Local leaders also suggested establishing a permanent community-managed walking street and night market to enrich nighttime activities and generate additional revenue for residents. In addition, Ayutthaya’s provincial administration is crafting a comprehensive master plan to connect tourism routes from the historical island area to surrounding sectors using an electric vehicle transport system and newly designed riverside piers, enhancing both convenience and sustainability.

Minister Surasak wrapped up the meeting with optimism, believing that the shared efforts of government, private organizations, and communities can bring these proposals to fruition. He envisions Ayutthaya evolving into a global destination where visitors stay longer, spend more, and continue to return. This revamped tourism strategy is set to significantly benefit Thailand's economy while ensuring the preservation of its cultural heritage sustainably.
