Australia is currently enduring a significant heatwave, prompting widespread warnings as the nation commemorates Australia Day on January 26, 2026. Temperatures are projected to soar dangerously high, particularly in southern regions like Victoria and South Australia, where predictions indicate the mercury could surge into the upper 40s Celsius.
On Sunday, a staggering 48.5°C was recorded in South Australia, raising fire danger alerts in numerous areas. Authorities have voiced grave concerns about public safety, leading to the cancellation of various Australia Day events. In Adelaide, both a parade and a light show were scrapped due to the severe heat forecasts, with organizers stressing safety remains the top priority despite the cancellation.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued heatwave advisories for Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Northern Territory, and the Australian Capital Territory. Many of these alerts will remain in effect through Wednesday, underscoring the ongoing severity of the weather.
Victoria's emergency management commissioner, Tim Wiebusch, remarked that such extreme heat conditions haven't been recorded in the state for almost 20 years. He cautioned residents to heed the warnings, recalling the perilous weather that preceded the devastating 2009 bushfires.
The heatwave presents a significant fire risk, particularly in South Australia and southwestern Victoria, where hot, arid conditions along with strong winds have heightened the chances of wildfires. Firefighters are actively combating several fires in Victoria, leading to evacuations and threatening properties.
The extreme weather has also affected the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, with player Jannik Sinner suffering from cramps during his game, causing a temporary halt to protect players from the intense heat. Spectators are advised to prioritize their safety.
In contrast, Western Australia dealt with Tropical Cyclone Luana over the weekend, which inflicted damage to residences and resorts before gradually weakening inland.
Authorities continue to recommend that people remain indoors in cool places, such as homes, libraries, community centers, or shopping malls. Residents are also advised to keep windows and curtains closed to maintain cooler indoor temperatures during this severe heatwave.
