Anupam Kher Shares Hilarious Tales of Bhaang and Marijuana

Post by : Mara Rahim

Renowned actor Anupam Kher recently shared his whimsical memories of experimenting with marijuana and bhaang during a candid session on Samdish's podcast Unfiltered. The 70-year-old revealed that these amusing yet intense experiences ultimately led him to eschew these substances for good.

Reflecting on one particular incident, Kher narrated, “I must have taken two puffs, then found myself gazing at the sky. I saw a plane take off from the airport and kept watching it until it shrank into a minute dot; I was fixated until I believed it had landed at Heathrow Airport,” he said.

He recounted the sensation of disorientation brought on by the drug. “I felt insane. Later, when I got into my car, I couldn’t determine if the road was moving or if it was my car that was in motion,” Kher remembered. This overwhelming experience convinced him never to approach marijuana again.

His trials with bhaang at the National School of Drama (NSD) were even more chaotic. Kher remarked, “After trying it once, I vowed to never touch it again because I couldn’t stop laughing for eight straight hours!” He shared how his classmates behaved under its influence, saying, “While on the terrace, they yelled to the warden, ‘The army is coming!’ I laughed so much that I pleaded for rescue.”

Kher reminisced about a puzzling moment when he was waiting endlessly for a friend's reply, puzzled by his silence. “It felt like scenes straight out of Jim Carrey’s The Mask. After that, I swore off bhaang for life,” he stated.

He also recalled a past encounter where authorities mistakenly thought incense in his luggage was a drug. His wife, Kirron Kher, accidentally added to the confusion by joking, “You’re smuggling hashish?” His comedic response was, “If I manage to get out of this, I’ll come back and divorce you!”

These anecdotes illustrate the volatile nature of early experiments with substances and their lasting repercussions. Kher's tales combine humor and anxiety, revealing their significant role in guiding his later choices. He emphasized the importance of avoiding substances like marijuana and bhaang based on these experiences.

Anupam Kher's stories offer an entertaining insight into the lighter, unexpected moments of his youth, reminding us that even public figures have humorous glimpses from their past. His reflections also highlight the notion that youthful curiosity can lead to memorable, even alarming, experiences.
