As Ajman continues its rapid transformation, the newly inaugurated Sheikh Zayed Street Development Project in Al Helio marks a decisive step in enhancing the city’s infrastructure. This detailed editorial explores the project’s background, scope, strategic impact, and its role within the emirate’s long-term urban vision.

1. Project Overview

On July 11, Ajman Municipality and Planning Department, in partnership with Ajman Police and under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, launched a significant road upgrade in Al Helio. The project covers a 2.8 km stretch and is valued at AED 63 million

Key components include:

  • Widened the street to three lanes in each direction.
  • Added two signalised intersections for safer traffic flow
  • American University of Sharjah
  • Installed a new rainwater drainage system and modern street lighting
  • American University of Sharjah
  • Improved sidewalks and organised parking spaces to enhance accessibility

2. Strategic Context and Urban Planning

Ajman Vision 2030 outlines an integrated and sustainable transport network for the emirate. This road in Al Helio aligns closely with those ambitions by reducing congestion, improving connectivity, and preparing the community for future growth

While the Sheikh Zayed Street project is one among many, it is a pivotal link in Ajman’s expanding infrastructure efforts. The municipality’s recent focus on industrial roads and public safety demonstrates a city-wide commitment to high-quality, reliable transport systems

3. Why Al Helio Matters

Al Helio is transforming from a quiet suburb into a key residential and commercial hub. The neighbourhood now supports diverse developments—home plots, apartments, shops, and upcoming public services—all relying on efficient roads

Better roads here mean smoother commutes for residents and lay the foundation for new markets and real estate development. It’s not merely a repair; it’s a catalyst for local economic growth.

4. Stakeholder Insights

Dr Eng. Mohammed Ahmed bin Omair Al Muhairi, Executive Director, emphasised the technical standards and the project's role in enhanced daily mobility .

Lieutenant Colonel Fouad Yousuf Al Khaja, Traffic Head at Ajman Police, echoed this sentiment: the improvements will significantly ease traffic and make driving safer, especially near Emirates Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street .

5. Immediate Benefits

  • This upgrade offers several clear advantages to residents and visitors alike:
  • Traffic Relief: Wider roads and smart junctions will reduce delays.
  • Rainy-Day Ready: Modern drainage prevents flooding during heavy rain.
  • Enhanced Safety: Signalised crossings and better walkways protect pedestrians.
  • Improved Lighting: LED streetlights enhance visibility while saving energy.
  • Economic Access: Businesses and homes along the corridor will be more reachable.

6. The Bigger Picture

Ajman’s growing investment in public infrastructure signals broader ambitions. In 2024, construction contracts in the emirate soared by over 60%, reaching AED 9.65 billion
. From industrial zones to recreational trails, Ajman is building its urban future on several active fronts.

The Sheikh Zayed Street project, though moderate in scope, reflects how Ajman combines local needs with national objectives. It strengthens the region’s appeal to families, businesses, and investors.

7. Sustainability and Future Outlook

This project dovetails with Ajman’s commitment to smart and sustainable growth. By integrating drainage, energy-efficient lighting, pedestrian safety, and high-quality materials, the city demonstrates foresight in urban planning
