With the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka on the horizon, newly appointed Pakistan ODI captain Shaheen Afridi has energized his teammates, sending a clear message to stay focused. Kicking off Tuesday in Rawalpindi, Afridi emphasized building on the momentum from their recent 2-1 victory against South Africa. This series serves as Pakistan's second major challenge in the 50-over format since a disappointing showing in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Afridi regarded the triumph over South Africa in Faisalabad as a significant morale boost for his side. “Winning against South Africa was crucial for our confidence. It was my inaugural series as captain, and I take pride in how the players adapted to challenges and worked as a cohesive unit,” he remarked. He commended his team's energy, aim, and collaboration, highlighting their strong sense of unity during the series.
The left-arm pacer underscored the necessity for Pakistan to achieve greater consistency in their performances. “Heading into the Sri Lanka series, it’s imperative we maintain that winning momentum. Our goal is to enhance consistency and progress in all areas as a team,” Afridi stated. He underscored the need for balance across batting, bowling, and fielding to ensure Pakistan evolves as a formidable ODI outfit.
Afridi acknowledged Sri Lanka's disciplined approach and proficient cricket style. “They are a structured team and provide challenges with their expertise. We must play intelligently, adhere to our plans, and maintain a positive outlook,” he assessed. The focus will be on effectively implementing strategies, accurately assessing match situations, and staying composed during tense moments. Afridi reminded his squad to leverage home advantage wisely while respecting their opponents.
He articulated that modern cricket success relies on teamwork rather than individual skills. “It’s a collective effort; it’s not about just me, Fakhar (Zaman), Babar (Azam), or Saim (Ayub). Each of us must give our all,” he asserted. Afridi encouraged players to support each other, even those struggling with form, as a nurturing team environment fosters confidence and unity. “We should rally behind those who aren’t scoring and always trust in our collective potential,” he emphasized.
His ultimate aim is to ensure the team's performances resonate with their supporters. “The goal is to grow as a team and to deliver matches that our fans can proudly celebrate,” Afridi concluded. He believes Pakistan’s ODI squad possesses the talent to rank among the elite, as long as they stay united and disciplined.
The squad for the three-match ODI series includes a blend of youth and experience, featuring Shaheen Afridi (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Faisal Akram, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haseebullah, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim Jr., Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, and Salman Ali Agha.
This lineup reflects Pakistan’s commitment to nurturing a versatile team capable of rising to challenges across conditions. As the ODI series approaches, Pakistan aims to enhance its winning rhythm and refine its lineup ahead of upcoming international events.
Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy signifies a new era for Pakistan’s ODI squad. His ability to inspire and unify the team is already evident and the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka offers another chance to bolster confidence. Fans nationwide will be eagerly anticipating as the Men in Green strive to prolong their winning streak and cultivate a more consistent, competitive ODI legacy.
