Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the Games of the Future (GOTF) Abu Dhabi 2025, presented by ADNOC, is set to unfold from December 18 to 23 at ADNEC Centre in Abu Dhabi. An impressive opening ceremony on December 17 will herald a pioneering exhibition of hybrid sports that merge physical agility with digital adeptness, themed: Next Gen Human. Play the Future.

Understanding Phygital Sports

Phygital sports represent a harmonious integration of conventional athletic contests with digital gaming sectors. Clubs first engage in virtual rounds leading to face-offs in physical venues, where cumulative scores unveil the ultimate victors. This evolution acknowledges the increasing convergence of technological capabilities and traditional athletic performance.

This event will witness participation from over 850 athletes across 60 nations—including esteemed clubs, emerging talents, and standout performers—competing in 11 distinct disciplines, showcasing one of the most varied and competitive rosters to date.

Leadership Perspectives

His Excellency Faisal Al Bannai, adviser to the UAE President and Secretary General of the ATRC, remarked:
"Phygital sport transcends mere format; it embodies a progressive mindset for the youth. Abu Dhabi takes pride in fostering innovation and nurturing communities around future technologies."

Nis Hatt, CEO of Phygital International, expressed:
"The Games of the Future establishes a pioneering standard for phygital sports, merging equitable, competitive, and innovative gameplay across both physical and digital realms."

Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, emphasized the event's significance:
"Through the confluence of digital technologies, immersive gaming, and immediate analytics, we are transforming competition and enhancing global fan interaction."

Competition & Rewards

Recent draw ceremonies have defined group-stage matchups in several disciplines. Competing clubs aspire for advancement towards a total prize pool of US$5 million, while fans can anticipate thrilling narratives evolving throughout the competition.

Phygital Sports Summit

On December 17, Abu Dhabi will also host a significant Phygital Sports Summit, a forum dedicated to discussing the evolution of hybrid sports. Innovators, athletes, analysts, and policymakers will dive into discussions surrounding human–AI collaboration, youth involvement, athlete health, and the long-term effects of phygital competitions.

The summit will feature extensive keynote speeches, panel discussions, and informal dialogues, led by notable figures including Amy Jane Gillingham, Mohammed Al Hosani, and Sabine Sassine. Esteemed guests slated to attend include:

  • His Excellency Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, UAE Minister of Sports

  • President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan

  • Ministers from Bahrain and Türkiye

The Games of the Future Abu Dhabi 2025 is organized by ASPIRE in collaboration with Ethara and Phygital International, with support from the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the UAE Ministry of Sports.
