In a significant announcement, Aaron Rodgers declared that the upcoming 2026 NFL season will conclude his illustrious football career. The Pittsburgh Steelers' veteran quarterback revealed his retirement plans on Wednesday, specifying that he will hang up his cleats following his 22nd season.
“This is it,” Rodgers expressed during a post-practice interview on the second day of the Steelers' voluntary organized team activities.
The 42-year-old did not delve into specifics regarding his decision to retire, yet he reflected on a pivotal moment earlier this year when he briefly considered stepping away from football entirely. Despite contemplating retirement after the Steelers' disappointing playoff loss to the Houston Texans in January and the subsequent resignation of head coach Mike Tomlin, a change of heart followed.
The hiring of Mike McCarthy, with whom he shares a successful history from their time together at the Green Bay Packers, revitalized Rodgers’ career ambitions. He encouraged Steelers general manager Omar Khan to discuss the head coaching role with McCarthy.
Together, they previously clinched a Super Bowl title in Green Bay, forging one of the league's most effective collaborations. This strong bond influenced Rodgers’ decision to return for another shot on the field.
Rodgers emphasized that remaining healthy and the opportunity to wrap up his career amongst familiar colleagues made the prospect of one more season appealing. He described the return to Pittsburgh, reuniting with McCarthy and many former Packers staff, as “surreal.”
Stepping inside the Steelers' meeting room alongside McCarthy reminded him of his early days in 2006, as he supported Brett Favre in Green Bay.
Despite his age, Rodgers had a commendable season last year, throwing 24 touchdown passes against just seven interceptions, leading Pittsburgh to win the AFC North title. However, the physical demands of the game were highlighted by injuries and their playoff exit against Houston.
McCarthy lauded Rodgers during training, stating that he can still hold his own against any quarterback in the league. Beyond playing, Rodgers is expected to mentor younger quarterbacks Drew Allar and Will Howard as the Steelers eye a future beyond his retirement.
Rodgers conveyed enthusiasm regarding the team's offseason enhancements, which include new talents like wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., running back Rico Dowdle, and rookie receiver Germie Bernard. He also has confidence in the Steelers’ offensive line and defense, spearheaded by stars Cam Heyward and TJ Watt.
As his final season approaches, the future Hall of Famer is dedicated to cherishing each moment and striving for success one last time with Pittsburgh.
“I am thrilled about these guys,” Rodgers remarked. “I am thrilled about this team.”
