15 Injured in Violent Attack at Japanese Tyre Factory, Suspect Detained

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

A disturbing incident unfolded on Friday at a tyre manufacturing plant in central Japan, where 15 workers sustained injuries, leading to immediate emergency responses and an extensive police probe. Law enforcement officials confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man suspected of attempted murder, accused of stabbing several employees and using a chemical substance believed to be bleach.

The attack took place at a facility operated by Yokohama Rubber Co. in Mishima city, situated in the Shizuoka prefecture, west of Tokyo. This site specializes in the production of tyres for trucks and buses.

Injured Workers Hospitalized

Local fire authorities reported that eight workers suffered stab injuries and were quickly transported to nearby hospitals. Among them, five individuals are in serious condition. An additional seven were injured due to exposure to chemicals during the attack, and all are currently receiving medical care.

Emergency responders from the Fujisan Nanto Fire Department were among the first to arrive on the scene, securing the area and providing critical medical support before the victims were taken to various hospitals in the vicinity.

Suspect Captured Immediately

According to Shizuoka prefecture police, the suspect was taken into custody inside the factory shortly after the violence began. They have released little information about a possible motive or whether he was an employee of the company.

Police also informed Associated Press that their inquiry is ongoing, aimed at piecing together the sequence of events and the suspect’s background.

Weapon and Protective Gear Observed

Reports in local media presented unsettling details regarding the suspect. As per Asahi newspaper, he was seen wielding a survival knife and donning a gas mask during the assault. Investigators are performing forensic evaluations to clarify the chemical's composition, with initial assessments suggesting it may be bleach.

Factory Secured and Investigations Launched

Following the attack, police quickly cordoned off the factory to protect any remaining workers. Officers are in the process of gathering evidence, scrutinizing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses to ascertain the full context of this violent episode.

Authorities assured that no further injuries have been reported after the suspect's apprehension. Factory operations were suspended as a safety precaution, and employees were evacuated while the area was deemed secure.

Company's Response Pending

Yokohama Rubber Co. acknowledged the incident; however, a comprehensive public statement has yet to be issued. The company is anticipated to fully cooperate with investigators and offer assistance to the affected employees and their families.

Concerns Over Workplace Safety Amplified

This attack has intensified discussions in Japan regarding workplace safety and readiness for emergencies, particularly in light of recent episodes involving chemical injuries and mass harm. Officials emphasized that there remains no danger to the general public but encouraged businesses to review their security protocols.

Further updates will be disseminated as the investigation evolves and additional information is obtained.
