The International Cricket Council has suspended USA Cricket’s membership immediately due to repeated failures in managing the sport in the country. This decision comes after a thorough review over the past year, which included consultations with key stakeholders involved in cricket in the United States.
The ICC said USA Cricket did not meet its obligations as a member. The main reasons include the failure to set up a proper governance structure to manage cricket efficiently, the lack of progress toward official recognition by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and actions that have damaged cricket’s reputation in the USA and worldwide.
Despite the suspension, USA’s national cricket teams will still be allowed to participate in ICC competitions and continue preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The ICC or its appointed representatives will temporarily oversee the management and administration of USA teams to make sure players continue training and developing their skills. This step ensures that athletes and the sport itself are not affected by the administrative issues.
The ICC has also formed a Normalisation Committee to guide USA Cricket on the necessary steps to restore its membership. These steps include clear and specific changes to the governance structure, operations, and overall management. The committee will monitor progress and provide support to make sure USA Cricket becomes fully compliant with ICC rules.
This suspension follows a warning given to USA Cricket at the ICC annual meeting in 2024, where the organization was given 12 months to fix compliance issues. Despite co-hosting the T20 World Cup in the Americas, the required improvements were not completed, which led to the current decision.
Through this approach, the ICC aims to protect players, maintain high-performance programs, and ensure the development of cricket in the USA. The decision reflects the importance of good governance and accountability in growing the sport. By temporarily managing USA Cricket, the ICC is providing a roadmap for the organization to fix its issues and regain full membership while keeping cricket in the USA moving forward.
