FAA Orders Expand as U.S. Shutdown Disrupts Holiday Air Travel

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Passengers across the United States are facing growing disruption as airlines and regulators alter schedules in response to government-mandated flight cuts at several of the country’s busiest airports. The measures come amid a record-long federal shutdown that is increasingly affecting airport operations and traveller plans.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the guidance on Wednesday, pointing to safety risks tied to an understaffed air traffic control system. Roughly 13,000 air traffic controllers and about 50,000 TSA employees have been working without pay, creating staffing shortfalls that industry officials say have already impacted more than 3.2 million travellers.

The FAA’s phased reductions will begin on Friday, trimming about 4% of planned flights, then rising to roughly 5% on Saturday and 6% on Sunday, with the possibility of cuts reaching 10% next week if the shutdown continues. The timing is acute as millions prepare to travel for the Thanksgiving period, typically one of the busiest travel weeks.

Major carriers including United, American, Southwest and Frontier have reported surges in customer inquiries via social platforms and call centres, reflecting widespread concern. Airlines say they will prioritize reductions on regional and non-hub routes where feasible and are working to rebook affected passengers.

Analysts warn that even short-term reductions can produce cascading operational and financial effects for carriers, given the tightly scheduled nature of modern airline networks. While quieter travel windows may soften immediate impacts, a prolonged shutdown risks deeper disruptions for the broader travel sector.

Authorities urge travellers to monitor communications from their airlines, keep travel plans flexible and check for rebooking options as the FAA finalises its flight reduction orders.
