UN Aid Chief Warns of Massive Work Ahead in Devastated Gaza

Post by : Saif Ali Khan

The United Nations’ relief coordinator, Tom Fletcher, has highlighted the enormous challenges facing Gaza as the region begins the slow process of recovery following two years of conflict. The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, now in its second week, has allowed aid to reach the devastated area, but rebuilding lives and infrastructure remains a “massive, massive job,” Fletcher said.

During a visit to the Sheikh Radwan wastewater treatment plant in northern Gaza City, Fletcher witnessed the destruction firsthand. Buildings that stood just months ago now lie in ruins, leaving residents struggling to manage basic needs such as sanitation. “People are trying to dig latrines in the rubble,” Fletcher said. “Most of all, they want dignity.”

Aid and Recovery Efforts

Since the truce was brokered with the help of US President Donald Trump, hundreds of trucks carrying food, medical supplies, and other essential items have entered Gaza via Israeli checkpoints. According to UN figures, nearly 950 trucks have crossed into Gaza in recent days. Aid agencies continue to call for the Rafah border crossing with Egypt to reopen to speed delivery of food, fuel, and medicine.

Fletcher outlined a 60-day recovery plan, which includes:

Delivering one million meals per day.

Rebuilding the health care system.

Providing tents and winter supplies for families.

Reopening schools for hundreds of thousands of children.

Restoring electricity and sanitation systems.

The UN and other relief organizations are working to restore basic services and support the private and public sectors to help residents return to daily life.

Hostages and Families

The ceasefire also involves the return of hostages and the remains of those killed during the October 7, 2023 attacks. Hamas has released all 20 surviving hostages and returned 10 of the 28 bodies of deceased hostages.

Most recently, the body of Eliyahu Margalit, a 75-year-old farmer from Nir Oz kibbutz, was handed over by Hamas via the Red Cross. Known as “Churchill” by friends, Margalit had a deep connection to horses and had been kidnapped while feeding them on October 7, 2023. His family, including daughter Nili Margalit, who was previously released, has received his remains.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the identification and said the government would continue efforts to recover the remains of all remaining abductees. Hamas has affirmed its commitment to completing the prisoner exchange process under the truce.

Challenges Ahead

The Gaza Strip, home to more than two million Palestinians, has been heavily damaged by conflict. Thousands of homes, schools, and hospitals have been destroyed. Restoring basic infrastructure such as electricity, clean water, and sewage systems is urgent. Fletcher emphasized that the people of Gaza need immediate help not just to survive but to live with dignity.

The international community, including Turkey and other partners, is prepared to assist with rescue, reconstruction, and humanitarian aid. However, the pace of recovery is limited by security conditions, logistical challenges, and the need to clear rubble and restore essential services.

Gaza faces one of the most difficult recovery efforts in recent history. The combined work of the UN, local authorities, and international partners will focus on providing food, water, shelter, education, and healthcare to residents. Fletcher’s visit underscores the scale of destruction and the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian action.
