Gulf Families Choose Local Adventures Over Long-Haul Trips

Post by : Saif Ali Khan

Families across the Gulf are increasingly choosing short trips close to home instead of long-distance vacations abroad, citing convenience, affordability, and opportunities to connect with nature.

Destinations such as Hatta in the UAE, Jabal Akhdar in Oman, and AlUla in Saudi Arabia are attracting families with outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and comfortable stays. In Hatta, visitors can stay in dome tents or cabins, cycle along trails, kayak, and enjoy mountain scenery. Glamping has become particularly popular during cooler months.

In Oman, Jabal Akhdar offers hiking trails, ancient terraces, abandoned villages, and UNESCO-recognized irrigation systems. James Reeves, general manager of a holiday property in the area, said, “Families today want experiences that are enriching, memorable, and suitable for all ages.”

Saudi Arabia is also promoting short family trips. AlUla features sandstone canyons, heritage villages, and open-air museums, while destinations like Rijal Almaa and Dirab Valley offer a mix of cultural and outdoor activities.

Residents say these trips provide a chance to disconnect from screens, enjoy nature, and spend quality time with family. Ruth Bradley, a Dubai resident, drove to Oman with her 13-year-old son over Eid, visiting Wadi Tiwi and Ras Al-Jinz Turtle Reserve. She said, “It was one of the most breathtaking things we’ve ever done together.”

Tourism authorities in the Gulf are investing in adventure parks, eco-glamping, hiking trails, and cultural experiences to support this growing trend. Locations like Jebel Jais in Ras Al-Khaimah and Jebel Hafeet Desert Park in Al-Ain are becoming popular weekend destinations.
