Yami Gautam reveals ‘Haq’ gets clean UAE release, no cuts made

Bollywood actor Yami Gautam is ready to make a powerful return to the big screen with Haq, a courtroom drama that delves into questions of justice, gender, and faith. Ahead of its release, the actor has disclosed that the film has passed the UAE censorship board without a single cut — a strong indication, she says, of the film’s balanced and respectful storytelling.

“This is the first time I’m sharing this — our film Haq faced no cuts in the UAE. It’s rated 15+, which means it’s watchable for all audiences above that age,” Yami revealed. “If the UAE authorities, who are known for their careful scrutiny, found no issue, it clearly means our film doesn’t target any religion or faith.”

Yami’s statement comes at a time when films touching upon religious or legal themes often invite controversy even before release. The actor expressed hope that audiences will approach Haq with an open mind and allow the story to speak for itself.

The Case That Shaped Indian Law

Haq, directed by Suparn Varma, is based on the real-life Shah Bano Begum case, one of the most consequential legal battles in India’s post-independence history. The 1985 Supreme Court judgment in Mohd Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum affirmed that divorced Muslim women were entitled to maintenance under the Criminal Procedure Code — a verdict that sparked intense national debate on religion, law, and women’s rights.

The screenplay is inspired by Jigna Vora’s acclaimed book Bano: Bharat Ki Beti, which documents Shah Bano’s struggle for justice and dignity. In Haq, Yami plays Shazia Bano, a woman fighting for her right to equality, while Emraan Hashmi portrays her husband and legal adversary, Abbas Khan.

A Film About Humanity, Not Division

According to Yami, Haq isn’t a story of confrontation between communities but a reflection of human resilience and legal justice. “It’s not about one religion or one side. It’s about a woman’s courage to seek what’s right,” she said.

The film’s UAE clearance, often seen as a significant milestone for Indian releases, further validates the filmmakers’ intention. The Gulf region maintains strict standards for content dealing with religious themes, and a clean release signals international confidence in the movie’s message.

Production and Cinematic Vision

Backed by Junglee Pictures, Insomnia Films, and Baweja Studios, Haq combines the intensity of courtroom drama with emotional depth. Director Suparn Varma, known for his work on The Family Man and Rana Naidu, has reportedly crafted a narrative that remains faithful to historical events while maintaining cinematic tension.

The ensemble cast — including Sheeba Chaddha and Vartika Singh — adds further weight to the story’s portrayal of social justice and human values.

Set to release on November 7, Haq is expected to ignite discussions on legal reform and women’s empowerment while revisiting one of the most debated cases in Indian jurisprudence.

Yami Gautam’s Recent Streak of Socially Relevant Roles

In recent years, Yami Gautam has carved a niche for herself by choosing stories that blend entertainment with purpose. From A Thursday to Article 370, her roles have consistently showcased women who stand against systemic injustice.

With Haq, Yami appears poised to extend that legacy — playing a character whose personal battle mirrors a larger societal question.

As anticipation builds, the clean UAE approval serves as early validation that Haq aims to inspire dialogue, not controversy. For audiences waiting for a meaningful courtroom drama grounded in truth, Haq may just be one of this year’s most significant releases.
