During the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia have reiterated their commitment to bolstering bilateral relations and enhancing regional collaboration. On May 8, 2026, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to explore avenues for deepening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This meeting marked a significant step toward fostering cooperation in promoting regional stability, economic progress, and unity within ASEAN.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung highlighted the importance the Vietnamese Government places on the enduring friendship and partnership with Indonesia. The establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025, initiated by a visit from Vietnamese General Secretary To Lam, has laid a strong foundation for further collaboration in key areas and has bolstered political trust between the two nations, according to Vietnamese officials.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto congratulated his Vietnamese counterpart on his recent appointment, expressing his eagerness to collaborate closely with the Vietnamese Government moving forward. He acknowledged Vietnam as a significant regional partner for Indonesia and expressed confidence that increased cooperation would yield long-term benefits for the citizens of both nations.

Both leaders indicated their satisfaction with the steady advancements in cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture, and politics. They agreed on the necessity of maintaining regular high-level exchanges and enhancing collaboration in burgeoning fields such as the digital economy, green transformation, renewable energy, and technological advancements. Officials believe that expanding efforts in these areas will bolster sustainable economic development and boost regional competitiveness in Southeast Asia.

Trade and economic collaboration emerged as pivotal topics during these discussions, with both nations committing to facilitate market access for their goods. The aim is to increase bilateral trade to $18 billion or more in a sustainable manner. Additionally, the leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in the energy sector, including oil and gas exploration, to strengthen regional energy security and support future economic initiatives.

Beyond bilateral issues, the two leaders shared perspectives on various regional and international matters of mutual concern. They underscored the significance of ASEAN unity, multilateral cooperation, and maintaining the organization’s centrality in regional dynamics. Both Vietnam and Indonesia concurred on the necessity for ASEAN member states to unite in addressing common challenges and to amplify the collective voice of the organization on critical international issues.

The dialogue between Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and President Prabowo Subianto symbolizes the burgeoning strategic alliance between Vietnam and Indonesia. As both nations endeavor to deepen their economic cooperation and fortify regional partnerships, officials noted that the discussions yielded positive results, reinforcing their mutual commitment to fostering a stable, peaceful, and prosperous Southeast Asia through enhanced bilateral and ASEAN collaboration.
