Trump Signals “Indirect” Role in High-Stakes Iran-U.S. Nuclear Talks

Post by : Saif Nasser

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will be involved indirectly in the latest round of nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran, which resumed this week in Geneva, Switzerland. Trump described the discussions as “very important” while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, signalling Washington’s continued engagement as both sides attempt to address Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The talks come amid rising regional tension, with the U.S. military bolstering its presence in the Middle East — including the deployment of a second aircraft carrier — and Iran conducting military drills in the Strait of Hormuz. Both developments reflect the broader geopolitical backdrop in which diplomacy and displays of force are occurring side by side.

Iran’s government has maintained that any diplomatic engagement must respect its sovereignty and peaceful nuclear rights, while U.S. officials continue to press for constraints on Iran’s enrichment activities. Discussions have reportedly produced agreement on some “guiding principles” early in the talks, but significant differences remain on core issues such as uranium enrichment and ballistic missile programmes.

In parallel to the negotiations, leaders including Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom discussed the urgency of peace efforts with Trump after the first day of talks, highlighting the international stakes of the process.

The United States says it prefers a diplomatic solution but has not ruled out other options if negotiations fail, reinforcing its strategic posture both diplomatically and militarily.
