Avalanche Triggers Train Derailment in Swiss Alps; Injuries Reported Near Goppenstein

A passenger train derailed early Monday morning in the Swiss Alps near the village of Goppenstein after an avalanche is believed to have swept onto the tracks, officials said. The incident occurred on a regional rail line amid heavy snowfall and elevated avalanche warnings in the Valais region.

The train, operated by the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Bahn (BLS), was travelling between Goppenstein and Hohtenn with around 29 passengers on board when the collision with snow debris caused it to leave the tracks shortly after departing a mountain gallery.

Emergency services responded with ambulances, a helicopter, mountain rescue teams, and fire-rescue trains. At least five people were injured; one was taken to a hospital in Sion for treatment while the others were treated on site for their injuries.

Police said all passengers were safely evacuated from the derailed train. A formal investigation has been launched to determine whether the avalanche directly caused the derailment and to assess the full circumstances of the accident.

Rail traffic between Goppenstein and Brig remains suspended, with replacement bus services put in place while crews work to clear the line and restore safe operations. Avalanche warnings in the alpine region are high, making travel conditions hazardous and prompting authorities to warn residents and visitors to remain cautious.
