Authorities in Florida are aiming for the death penalty for a suspect in the tragic murders of two Bangladeshi doctoral students from the University of South Florida. The Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office has formally filed to seek capital punishment against 26-year-old Hisham Saleh Abugharbieh, following his indictment on two counts of first-degree murder and other serious charges. This case has deeply affected both the local and international educational communities.
Victims Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy, both 27 years old, vanished under mysterious circumstances on April 16 while studying at the university in Tampa. Investigators report that Limon was last seen at his off-campus residence with Abugharbieh, whereas Bristy was last observed near a science building on campus. Their disappearance prompted a significant search effort from local law enforcement.
Law enforcement apprehended Hisham Saleh Abugharbieh approximately one week following the students' disappearance. He has remained incarcerated while the investigation unfolds. Police utilized cellphone data and license plate tracking to follow his movements and locate Limon’s phone, which ultimately led to the discovery of Limon’s body on April 24.
Upon examination, Zamil Limon’s remains exhibited multiple stab wounds, suggesting he may have been bound before his death. Just days later, a kayaker found Nahida Bristy’s body in nearby waters, heightening concerns about the violent nature of the crime. Forensic evidence collected from the apartment shared by Abugharbieh, Limon, and Bristy could significantly implicate the accused.
During the investigation, authorities questioned both Abugharbieh and another roommate shortly after the students disappeared. Notably, investigators observed a bandage on the suspect’s pinky during questioning, even as he denied involvement in Limon's case. Reports suggest that Abugharbieh has a history of anger issues and has exhibited violent behavior towards family members.
Additional evidence from the apartment complex raised further red flags. A roommate reported that Abugharbieh had utilized a cart on the night of April 16 to transfer several boxes to a compactor. Police later retrieved Limon's personal items, including his wallet and university ID, from the trash area, which appeared to bear blood stains.
Subsequent searches of the residence, authorized by a search warrant, uncovered blood trails leading from the kitchen to Abugharbieh’s bedroom, where detectives also discovered soaked carpeting. In Limon's room, they found items belonging to Nahida Bristy, indicating her presence there. The evidence amassed from both the apartment and its vicinity is expected to play a crucial role as the case proceeds through the Florida judicial system.
