Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed in coordinated airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Tehran, according to official confirmation from state media.
The announcement was made by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) early Sunday, declaring that the 86-year-old cleric had “attained martyrdom.” Reports indicate he was killed inside his office during a wave of targeted strikes that hit key military and government facilities in the capital early Saturday.
Joint Operation Targeted Leadership US and Israeli officials said the operation focused on high-ranking Iranian leadership and strategic infrastructure. Israeli publication The Times of Israel quoted senior officials as confirming that Khamenei was killed when his compound was struck. Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was shown photographic evidence after the body was recovered.
US President Donald Trump later confirmed the development on social media, describing the operation as a decisive move against Iran’s top leadership. He stated that US intelligence had monitored Khamenei’s movements closely and that the strike was part of a broader strategy aimed at dismantling what Washington considers a long-standing regional threat.
Trump also warned that further military action could continue if required, framing the strikes as a step toward restoring stability in the Middle East.
Senior Officials Among The Dead In addition to Khamenei, several senior Iranian officials were reportedly killed. Sources said that Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Revolutionary Guards commander Mohammed Pakpour were among those who died. Israel’s military claimed that multiple high-ranking commanders were eliminated in the operation, including Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to the Supreme Leader.
Iranian media reports suggested that members of Khamenei’s immediate family were also present at the compound during the strike, though details remain limited.
Tehran Vows Retaliation Tehran condemned the strikes as unlawful and accused Washington and Tel Aviv of escalating tensions. Iran responded by launching missile attacks targeting Israel and several Gulf nations hosting US military installations, significantly heightening fears of a broader regional conflict.
Air defence systems were activated across multiple countries in the region as governments monitored the rapidly evolving situation.
Uncertain Future For Iran Khamenei had ruled Iran since 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic. As Supreme Leader, he held ultimate authority over the executive, judiciary and armed forces, shaping Iran’s domestic and foreign policies for more than three decades.
His sudden death leaves a leadership vacuum at a critical moment. No formal successor had been publicly announced, raising questions about the country’s political direction and internal stability.
Over the years, Khamenei consolidated power and maintained a firm stance against Western influence, frequently criticising US policies. Despite waves of domestic protests and mounting international pressure, he remained central to Iran’s political structure until his reported killing.
With tensions escalating and retaliatory strikes already under way, the region now faces one of its most volatile moments in recent history.
