Former President Donald Trump may engage in pivotal negotiations with Iran, which are slated to occur in Islamabad this week. As reported by Reuters, he is considering joining the talks either physically or remotely, depending on whether a final accord is reached.
Officials in Pakistan have confirmed that preparatory measures are finalized, with discussions poised to commence on Wednesday. This development aligns with the expiration of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which Trump anticipates will not be extended.
Initial fears arose that Iran might withdraw from the negotiations following the seizure of an Iranian-flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz. However, a senior figure in Iran has indicated that the nation is “positively reviewing” its choice to participate, although no conclusive determination has been made.
While both parties express a desire to progress, significant disagreements persist. Trump is pursuing an agreement aimed at curtailing further elevations in global oil prices and mitigating risks to financial markets. He has underscored that Iran must refrain from nuclear weapon development.
Conversely, Iran aims to capitalize on its strategic leverage in the Strait of Hormuz to negotiate an easing of economic sanctions. Tehran seeks to circumvent conflict while continuing its nuclear program with minimal constraints.
With escalating tensions, Trump has cautioned that the US could target vital infrastructure within Iran if no accord is reached. Iran has countered by asserting that it would respond by attacking power and water facilities in Gulf countries if provoked.
Pakistan is serving a crucial role as mediator and venue for the talks. Approximately 20,000 security personnel have been deployed in Islamabad to maintain safety during the negotiations. Additionally, reports suggest that US Vice President JD Vance is set to arrive in Pakistan to partake in the discussions.
As the situation unfolds, attention is focused on whether both countries can successfully engage in dialogue and achieve a breakthrough agreement.
