University of Sharjah Board Meeting Approves Advanced AI and PhD Programs

Sharjah, UAE – His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the University of Sharjah (UOS) Board of Trustees, presided over the 60th Board meeting held at the university's campus.

Opening the meeting, His Highness acknowledged the board members and applauded the university's ongoing advancement in academic, research, and administration. He emphasized the positive impact these efforts have had on UOS's status in international rankings across various fields.

Advancements in Academic Programs

His Highness recognized UOS for its commitment to uphold top academic standards. This includes continuous enhancements to its infrastructure, academic offerings, and research efforts. He stressed the necessity of updating university programs to meet the demands of global advancements and the needs of a modern workforce.

Graduation Approvals

The Board sanctioned the graduation of 1,607 students who concluded their studies by the end of the Summer Semester 2024–2025 and the Fall Semester 2025–2026, comprising:

  • 1,213 Bachelor’s degree recipients

  • 4 Postgraduate diploma holders

  • 314 Master’s degree recipients

  • 76 Doctoral graduates

Launch of New Programs

To meet the growing demands of the labor market and keep pace with rapid technological shifts, new programs were introduced, including:

  • PhD in Artificial Intelligence

  • PhD in Digital Transformation

  • Doctorate Residency in Dentistry

  • MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Biomedical Applications and Healthcare

  • BSc in Artificial Intelligence

  • MSc in Quantum Science and Technology

Establishment of New Centers

The Board also approved the formation of a Center for Artificial Intelligence Applications designed to enhance applied research and the practical application of AI in education and scientific exploration.

Moreover, it established a Strategic Partnerships Office to cultivate and enhance collaborations with both local and international entities, ensuring alignment with the university's mission.

Governance and Academic Reforms

Crucial academic and administrative reforms were sanctioned, which include:

  • Shortening the Bachelor's program in Oral and Dental Medicine and Surgery to five years

  • Revising the General Education Programme

  • Implementing a reviewed governance and organizational structure to promote transparency and accountability

Research and Institutional Development Insights

The Board members examined reports on:

  • Scientific research progress

  • New research facilities

  • National and global rankings and accreditations

Additionally, they deliberated on the updated University Strategy 2024–2030 (EDGE), which focuses on four strategic pillars:

  1. Bolstering Emiratisation in educational and administrative positions

  2. Pushing forward with digital transformation initiatives

  3. Enhancing collaborations on regional and international fronts

  4. Fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among students and alumni

Faculty Elevations and Oversight

The Board opted to promote 21 faculty members, including:

  • 11 to Professor

  • 10 to Associate Professor

Moreover, updates on external reviews, internal assessments, risk strategies, and Emiratisation efforts were thoroughly analyzed.

Performance Summary of the University

Dr. Esameldin Agamy, Chancellor of the University, delivered an extensive report outlining institutional performance, strategic developments, infrastructure improvement, community interactions, and international collaboration initiatives.

Participant Overview

The meeting attracted senior officials and educational leaders from the UAE and other countries, featuring representatives from prestigious institutions such as the University of Ottawa, MIT, Stanford, National University of Singapore, University of Malaya, McMaster University, University of Leicester, and Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.
