The recent trip of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India has sparked significant shifts in South Asian political dynamics, indirectly impacting Pakistan.
Shortly after Sheikh Mohammed's brief engagement in New Delhi, Abu Dhabi opted to cancel discussions regarding the operation of Islamabad International Airport. This agreement had been in the pipeline since August 2025, but the UAE has since lost interest and failed to secure a local partner for the venture.
A prominent Pakistani media outlet confirmed this development, although it did not speculate on political motivations. This decision appears particularly noteworthy amid rising tensions between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as both nations continue to back opposing factions in Yemen and are increasingly diverging in their geopolitical strategies.
Pakistan has been strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia, recently finalizing a defense agreement and seeking to establish an "Islamic NATO" alliance alongside Turkey. Conversely, the UAE is enhancing its strategic and defense collaborations with India, indicating a considerable shift in regional alliances.
Historically, the UAE has been among Pakistan's principal trading partners and a significant source of remittances. There is a large Pakistani workforce in the UAE, and the two countries have worked closely in defense, energy, and investment spheres. However, relations have soured due to governance challenges, safety issues, political influences, and setbacks experienced by Pakistan's state-owned enterprises. Pakistan has also proceeded with the privatization of essential assets such as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
Despite the UAE’s extensive international experience in airport management—even in conflict-affected regions like Afghanistan—its withdrawal from the Islamabad Airport initiative indicates a waning confidence in Pakistan's governance and infrastructure capabilities.
In contrasting developments, India and the UAE are deepening their ties. Following the recent diplomatic encounter, the UAE has agreed to release 900 Indian prisoners as a goodwill gesture. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Mohamed bin Zayed have affirmed their commitment to enhancing their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into a more intricate and robust alliance.
A key outcome of this visit was the advancement towards a full-fledged Strategic Defence Partnership, with both nations signing a Letter of Intent aimed at developing a Defence Cooperation Framework, underscoring a noteworthy geopolitical realignment in the region.
