UAE Commits $5 Million to Enhance Humanitarian Relief in Sudan

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant move, the United Arab Emirates has committed $5 million to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, reaffirming its dedication to aiding emergency relief initiatives as Sudan grapples with an intensifying humanitarian crisis.

This pledge came through a formal agreement between the UAE Aid Agency and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan. The resources are intended to bolster rapid-response efforts and guarantee that life-saving assistance reaches the most vulnerable populations impacted by ongoing conflict and displacement.

Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, highlighted that the dire humanitarian conditions in Sudan necessitate immediate and coordinated international action. He emphasized the vast displacement of civilians into neighboring nations, including Chad, South Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia, showcasing the escalating regional repercussions of the crisis.

“The deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan requires intensified collective efforts and swift responses to support early recovery, promote stability and alleviate the severe challenges faced by millions of people,” Al Ameri stated.

The United Nations welcomed the contribution, with Sajeda Al Shawa, Head of OCHA’s Office in the UAE, expressing gratitude for the UAE’s enduring support. She asserted that this funding will play a vital role in ensuring prompt delivery of life-saving aid in accordance with humanitarian principles.

“This contribution will help strengthen rapid humanitarian response mechanisms and ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most, when they need it,” she emphasized.

Since the onset of the current crisis, the UAE has delivered $784 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan. In total, UAE assistance over the past decade has amounted to $4.24 billion, underscoring a long-standing commitment to support the Sudanese populace during challenging times.

Additionally, the UAE reiterated its call for a humanitarian ceasefire, underscoring the necessity to safeguard civilians and facilitate the safe and uninterrupted delivery of aid. Officials affirmed that these measures are crucial for alleviating suffering, restoring stability, and bolstering long-term peace efforts in Sudan.
