Trump's Viral Greenland Meme Sparks Backlash

Trump's Viral Greenland Meme Sparks Backlash

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

US President Donald Trump has found himself in the spotlight once more regarding Greenland, this time due to an internet meme that has gone viral. The President, known for his interest in acquiring Greenland, participated in the online trend by sharing an AI-generated graphic depicting him alongside a penguin.

The White House-shared image showcases Trump strolling with a penguin towards snow-capped mountains, with the penguin proudly holding the US flag against the backdrop of the Greenland flag, all captioned with “Embrace The Penguin.” This post draws inspiration from the well-known "Nihilist Penguin" meme, originating from Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary, Encounters at the End of the World.

However, the image was soon met with waves of mockery and critique, as social media users were quick to point out that penguins are not native to the Arctic or Greenland. Journalist Pippa Crerar added to the conversation by emphasizing that these birds are exclusive to the Southern Hemisphere. Many internet users expressed their embarrassment over the post, sharing remixed versions that swapped out the penguin for a polar bear.

Recently, Trump has been active on social media with various AI images tied to Greenland. One notable picture featured him alongside Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, beside a sign proclaiming Greenland as a US territory. Another post displayed an expanded map of the United States, which bizarrely included Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela.

For years, Trump has promoted the notion of acquiring Greenland, intensifying his rhetoric as of late. There have even been threats of tariffs against some European nations intertwined with discussions about gaining total access to Greenland for military reasons.

The meme incident illustrates how Trump's aspirations for Greenland are now colliding with online culture, eliciting a worldwide response saturated with humor.
