In a striking announcement at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump revealed intentions to create a new fleet of warships named after him—an honor usually designated for former presidents. Joined by key Pentagon and Navy officials, he presented images and specifications of these innovative vessels.
The initial phase includes the construction of two “Trump-class” ships, with potential for expansion in the future. Trump depicted these vessels as “among the most lethal surface warfare ships ever built,” dubbing them “the largest battleships in our nation’s history.”
Projected to weigh between 30,000 and 40,000 tons, the ships will feature an extensive array of weaponry, combining conventional missiles with cutting-edge technologies like lasers and hypersonic missiles currently under research. Trump emphasized their capability to host nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missiles, augmenting their deterrent abilities.
These new additions will dwarf existing U.S. destroyers and cruisers but will be slightly smaller than the historic Iowa-class battleships, which were retired in the 1990s.
This announcement follows the Navy's disclosure of plans for a new frigate class named FF(X), designed to support the larger warships within the fleet. The Navy expects to deploy its first frigate by 2028, capitalizing on proven designs from the U.S. Coast Guard. However, some frigate projects, including the Constellation class, are under review or risk possible cancellation.
These developments arise amid heightened worries about China's swift naval expansion, with a recent congressional report indicating that U.S. shipbuilding is falling behind Beijing.
Trump affirmed, “We will restore America as a dominant force in shipbuilding. We will confirm that the U.S. has the most formidable fleet in the world, now and into the future, with these battleships taking the lead.”
The introduction of the Trump-class warships marks a significant commitment to enhancing U.S. naval strength with advanced technologies, reinforcing America's position in global maritime operations.
