Trump Invites Family of Slain Guard Member to White House Recognition

Post by : Mina Rahman

On Sunday, President Donald Trump warmly reached out to the family of Sarah Beckstrom, a National Guard soldier from West Virginia, who was tragically shot dead last week in Washington, D.C. The president expressed his condolences during a conversation with her devastated parents.

Beckstrom, aged 20, lost her life in an incident that also critically injured her fellow soldier, U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24. Both were part of a federally deployed security initiative in the capital.

Trump conveyed his interest in welcoming both families to the White House. He informed them, “When you’re ready, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,” and similarly acknowledged Wolfe’s situation, affirming his commitment to recognize both of them.

The shooting has resonated profoundly within the West Virginia community, leading to numerous tributes, including a vigil organized at Webster County High School, Beckstrom’s alma mater. Principal Gabriel Markle fondly remembered her as a young woman characterized by “quiet strength, a contagious smile, and uplifting positive energy.” He also mentioned her sweet and caring nature, always willing to assist others.

A recent graduate from Summersville, Beckstrom enlisted in the West Virginia National Guard in June 2023 and served honorably as a military police officer. Wolfe, hailing from Martinsburg, graduated from Musselman High School and began his military career in February 2019.

The perpetrator, identified as a 29-year-old Afghan national, faces charges including first-degree murder and armed assault. This tragic event has prompted the Trump administration to pause Afghan asylum applications and temporarily halt visa approvals for Afghan passport holders.

Funeral arrangements for Beckstrom are currently being organized by Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs. Wolfe remains hospitalized, fighting for his recovery.

During the vigil, Governor Patrick Morrisey celebrated Beckstrom’s bravery and commitment. He stated, “Though her time was far too brief, her impact on our community is enduring,” praising her as a “favorite daughter of Webster County” whose selflessness inspired those around her.

The community's collective grief, alongside federal acknowledgment, showcases both local sorrow and national tribute to the sacrifices made by these brave young soldiers.
