US President Donald Trump is slated to engage in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on December 29, seeking to re-energize the halted ceasefire efforts in Gaza. The talks will also delve into Israel’s security concerns regarding Hezbollah in Lebanon as well as recent military developments involving Iran.
During December, Netanyahu confirmed Trump’s invitation for talks aimed at propelling a transitional government forward, which includes establishing an international security presence in Gaza. While Trump has signposted the meeting’s approach, an official endorsement from the White House remains pending.
Netanyahu is anticipated to travel to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate for discussions on the future steps in the Gaza ceasefire, alongside discussions on Iran and Lebanon's implications. While Washington has facilitated ceasefires in numerous conflict areas, Israel continues to exercise caution concerning the rearmament of adversaries.
The ceasefire agreement reached in October stipulated that Israel retract its military presence from Gaza while Hamas would disarm and relinquish dominion over the region. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the critical need for a Palestinian technocratic government to oversee Gaza before the international security forces are dispatched, as per a recent UN mandate.
Even with a ceasefire in place, hostilities persist, with both Israel and Hamas levelling accusations of treaty violations. Hamas remains adamant on not disarming, consequently fortifying its position, while Israeli units retain deployments in sectors of Gaza. Israel has hinted at a potential resumption of military actions should Hamas refuse peaceful disarmament.
In Lebanon, a US-backed ceasefire established in November 2024 aimed at neutralizing Hezbollah operations, the Iran-aligned militant faction. Reports suggest Lebanon is moving towards achieving this disarmament, although Hezbollah resists the calls. This has led Israel to carry out regular strikes to impede Hezbollah’s rearmament. Concurrently, Iran is conducting missile drills amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Netanyahu has expressed that Israel seeks to avoid a confrontation with Iran, yet will address Tehran’s provocations during his dialogue with Trump. Earlier this year, Trump sanctioned US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites but has recently indicated a willingness to explore diplomatic channels with Tehran.
