On Sunday, President Donald Trump presided over the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors, recognizing the remarkable talents of Sylvester Stallone, Kiss, Gloria Gaynor, Michael Crawford, and George Strait as “legendary figures in many ways.” The first sitting president to host the event, Trump expressed that billions have relished their contributions, touting them as “among the greatest artists to have walked this Earth.”
The Kennedy Center has been a priority for Trump, who has restructured its board and secured over $250 million for renovation projects. In a lighthearted moment, he suggested possibly renaming it the “Trump Kennedy Center.” Throughout the ceremony, he appeared on stage three times, delivering both live applause and recorded segments honoring the honorees, all while making frank observations about the audience.
The evening showcased a diverse array of American culture: Stallone was recognized for his roles in the “Rocky” and “Rambo” series, Gaynor for her iconic hit “I Will Survive,” Kiss for their theatrical performances, Strait as a pillar of country music, and Crawford as a Broadway star with a Tony Award. Trump emphasized shared resilience as a common trait among both the artists and the audience.
Emotional tributes highlighted the night, particularly for Kiss, as they honored their late guitarist Ace Frehley with a striking red guitar surrounded by smoke. Cheap Trick energized the evening with their performance of “Rock and Roll All Nite.”
The honorees expressed their heartfelt gratitude, with Stallone saying receiving the honor felt “like being in the eye of a hurricane,” Crawford describing it as “humbling, especially at the end of a career,” and Gaynor calling it a “dream come true.”
Taking a proactive role, Trump carefully selected the 2025 honorees from a pool of over 50 candidates. While Stallone has previously shown support for him, other honorees shared varied political views but found common ground in unity following Trump's 2024 election victory.
The airing of the Kennedy Center Honors is anticipated to garner substantial viewership, with Trump forecasting record ratings for the prestigious event.
