Trump Responds to Controversy Over Caribbean Drug Operations

Post by : Mina Rahman

On Sunday, President Donald Trump addressed concerns surrounding reports that the US military conducted a second strike on a Caribbean vessel linked to drug trafficking, allegedly resulting in the deaths of survivors from an initial missile attack.

He stated he “wouldn’t have wanted” a subsequent strike on the boat involved in the operation from September 2, which marked the beginning of a public series of attacks on suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.

Witnesses have claimed that two individuals were seen holding onto the burning boat post-initial strike before US forces conducted a follow-up attack. Sources revealed that officials had allegedly ordered to “kill everyone on board.”

Defending Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump remarked, “I’m going to find out about it, but Pete said he did not order the death of those two men.” He asserted, “We’ll look into it, but no, I wouldn’t have wanted that — not a second strike. The first strike was very lethal.”

Hegseth, for his part, described the reports as unfounded.

Since early September, US aerial operations focusing on suspected drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific have reportedly resulted in at least 83 fatalities. The legality of these actions has come under scrutiny, with many advocating for a comprehensive investigation into potential extrajudicial killings.

Leaders from both parties in Congress are planning to gather a detailed account of the operations. Meanwhile, Hegseth faced backlash for sharing a satirical book cover online featuring Franklin the Turtle dressed in military attire, targeting boats, further intensifying the debate surrounding the strikes.
