Trump Advocates for Unified Federal AI Regulation to Enhance U.S. Competitiveness

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Former President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that a unified federal standard for artificial intelligence is essential, cautioning that varied state regulations might hinder innovation.

In a social media message, Trump remarked, “The overregulation by states threatens to choke off this engine of growth. We NEED a federal standard rather than a messy quilt of 50 state regulations.” He expressed concern that without a cohesive framework, China could rapidly close the gap in the international AI competition, a matter he has consistently claimed is vital for U.S. leadership.

He proposed that lawmakers might establish the federal standard either through a standalone bill or by folding it into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), asserting, “Incorporate it into the NDAA or pass an independent bill, and America will remain unbeatable.”

This push for a unified standard emerges amid increasing unease over the swift growth of AI technology. Experts highlight concerns that AI could disrupt elections, escalate fraud, and impact job security. Trump's strategy indicates a desire to simplify regulations, aimed at preserving America's technological advantage while preventing regulatory chaos across 50 different jurisdictions.

By prioritizing a federal standard, Trump aims to foster a stable regulatory landscape that promotes innovation and propels AI advancement in the U.S., ensuring it remains a leader in global technology.
