President Donald Trump has confirmed that a significant explosion occurred at a Venezuelan dock known for drug loading activities. Trump stated, "We had a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats with drugs. We targeted all the boats, and that area is now out of operation."
While Trump refrained from disclosing the specific target or which part of the US government was involved, he hinted at potential CIA involvement, saying, "I’m aware of who executed it, but I prefer not to say."
CNN has reported, citing unnamed sources, that the CIA carried out a drone strike on a coastal port facility in Venezuela earlier this month, aimed at a dock connected to the Tren de Aragua gang for drug storage and shipping. This action is part of the US's ongoing campaign to disrupt drug trafficking operations associated with Venezuela.
Previously, Trump has claimed he authorized the CIA for covert operations in Venezuela. Last week, he hinted on a radio program about a US mission targeting a "large facility" in the country without elaborating further. The CIA, alongside the White House and Pentagon, has remained tight-lipped, not offering any comments to Reuters.
The Venezuelan government has yet to respond to Trump’s claims, and no independent sources have confirmed the strike. Nonetheless, online rumors have circulated, associating the attack with a fire incident at a chemical facility, Primazol, which took place on Christmas Eve. Primazol has denied any link, asserting that the fire, which was quickly controlled, is under investigation. Nearby residents reported a loud explosion, fire, and the scent of chlorine in the air.
The Venezuelan communications ministry, responsible for government media relations, did not respond to requests for clarification from Reuters.
The Trump administration has made its commitment to tackle drug trafficking public, showcasing successful strikes on social media. The absence of official commentary from US security agencies about this specific incident has ignited speculation that it may have been a covert action, limiting the ability of officials to discuss it freely.
In recent months, the US has intensified pressure on Nicolás Maduro's government. Reuters has reported plans for an escalated phase of operations concerning Venezuela, beginning with covert actions. This initiative predominantly targets military strikes against drug trafficking vessels, resulting in over 20 strikes across the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, alongside at least 100 casualties.
Earlier this month, US military officials briefed Congress about a strike in September that tragically killed 11 individuals. Survivors of that initial strike were also affected by a subsequent attack ordered by Admiral Frank Bradley, raising concerns from congressional Democrats about its legality under international law.
In addition, the Trump administration has overseen a notable US military reinforcement in the Caribbean, deploying more than 15,000 troops to support its objectives against drug trafficking and Maduro's regime.
