Thamma crosses ₹140 crore worldwide in 8 days strong run

After a powerful start during its opening weekend, Maddock Films’ latest horror comedy Thamma continues to charm audiences across India and overseas. The film, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles, has now entered the coveted ₹100-crore club in India and crossed ₹140 crore worldwide in just eight days of release.

Steady Weekday Growth and Chhath Holiday Boost

Following an impressive weekend, Thamma managed to maintain a solid pace through the weekdays, thanks in part to the Chhath festival holiday in several regions. The film recorded a noticeable 28% jump in collections on Tuesday, earning ₹5.50 crore net in India compared to ₹4.25 crore on Monday. This took its total domestic earnings to ₹101.10 crore net, with a gross collection of ₹121.25 crore.

The midweek surge demonstrates Thamma’s growing word-of-mouth appeal and its hold across multiplex circuits in metros as well as tier-2 cities. The unique blend of horror and humour, combined with Ayushmann’s comic timing and Rashmika’s charm, seems to have resonated with family audiences during the festive season.

Global Box Office: Late Momentum Overseas

While the film’s initial overseas collections were modest due to Diwali not being a public holiday in most international markets, Thamma picked up significant pace over the weekend. It has now grossed over $2 million (approximately ₹16.75 crore) abroad and continues to collect an estimated $250,000 daily during weekdays.

This steady performance overseas has helped push Thamma’s total worldwide gross to around ₹140 crore after eight days. Trade analysts expect the film to maintain its run through the second weekend, particularly in key markets like North America, the UAE, and Australia, where Indian horror comedies have traditionally found niche appeal.

Thamma Overtakes Munjya, Eyes Bigger Milestones

With its eighth-day total, Thamma has surpassed the lifetime earnings of Munjya (₹130 crore), another hit from the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU). It is now the third-highest-grossing film in the franchise, trailing only behind Stree (₹182 crore) and the blockbuster Stree 2, which holds an enormous lifetime collection of ₹857 crore.

Industry insiders suggest that while Thamma might not touch Stree 2’s record-breaking numbers, it stands a strong chance of crossing Stree’s ₹182 crore mark before the end of its theatrical run, given its sustained domestic momentum and growing global traction.

Maddock Horror Comedy Universe’s Expanding Legacy

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma continues the tradition of Maddock Films’ successful horror-comedy brand, which began with Stree (2018) and expanded through films like Roohi, Bhediya, and Munjya. The MHCU’s unique formula of mixing supernatural folklore with relatable humour and social commentary has developed a dedicated audience over the years.

In Thamma, Ayushmann Khurrana takes on a quirky new avatar, supported by Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, whose layered performance adds depth to the film’s narrative. Varun Dhawan also appears in a cameo, reprising his Bhediya and Stree 2 character, effectively linking Thamma to the broader cinematic universe.

The film’s balance of humour, jump scares, and emotional storytelling has earned it praise from both critics and audiences, helping it maintain momentum beyond the first weekend.

Audience and Industry Response

Viewers have lauded Thamma for its fresh script and crisp direction, while trade trackers note that the film’s success reinforces Maddock’s reputation for delivering consistent mid-budget hits. The movie’s strong word-of-mouth and festive timing have ensured packed theatres even in its second week.

Industry experts believe Thamma’s success signals a renewed appetite for Indian horror comedies, a genre that has often been underexplored but commercially rewarding when executed well. The film’s performance also sets the stage for Maddock’s upcoming ventures, including Bhediya 2 and Shakti Shalini, which are expected to expand the MHCU further.

As Thamma heads into its second weekend, the focus now shifts to how well it sustains against upcoming releases. If the trend continues, the film could comfortably close its theatrical run with collections between ₹175 and ₹190 crore globally — a massive achievement for a horror comedy.

Ayushmann Khurrana’s return to mainstream success after a series of mixed performers, combined with Rashmika Mandanna’s rising star power, has clearly contributed to Thamma’s impressive box office trajectory.
