A 17-year-old boy from Melbourne, Australia, named Ben Austin, has died after being struck on the neck by a cricket ball during a training session. The accident happened at cricket nets in Ferntree Gully, a suburb in Melbourne, on Tuesday evening. Ben was wearing a helmet but did not have a neck guard when the ball hit him. The ball was delivered using a hand-held practice device known as a “wanger,” often used by coaches to throw fast deliveries for batting practice.

Emergency medical teams quickly reached the cricket ground around 5 p.m. local time (06:00 GMT). They provided first aid at the scene before rushing Ben to the hospital in a critical condition. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, Ben remained on life support and sadly passed away on Thursday. His sudden death has left his family, friends, and the local cricketing community in deep grief.

Ben’s father, Jace Austin, shared an emotional statement about his son’s passing. “For Tracey and I, Ben was an adored son, a deeply loved brother to Cooper and Zach, and a shining light in our lives,” he said.
