Sydney Sweeney Addresses Backlash Over American Eagle Jeans Campaign

Post by : Mina Rahman

Sydney Sweeney has responded to criticism of a widely discussed American Eagle jeans commercial that circulated across the United States. The spot, which played on the homophone of “jeans” and “genes,” showed Sweeney wearing the label’s denim and saying she had “great jeans.”

Some observers interpreted the advertisement as implying racial superiority because of the wordplay, while others treated it as a lighthearted marketing approach focused on appearance rather than ideology.

In a subsequent interview, Sweeney said the public reaction caught her off guard and emphasised her fondness for denim, noting she lives much of her life in jeans and a T-shirt. She also described former President Donald Trump’s public praise of the commercial as “surreal.”

The spot prompted broader discussion about eugenics and the language used in advertising. Sweeney drew attention to the literal meaning of genes — traits passed from parents to children — then undercut the debate with a quip about her clothing, adding that her jeans are blue.

American Eagle issued a statement rejecting any racial reading of the campaign, saying the company celebrates how people wear AE jeans and that the product is intended to be inclusive and confidence-boosting.

Despite the controversy, the advertisement succeeded in increasing the brand’s profile, contributing to stronger sales figures and a rise in its stock price, underscoring the commercial impact of polarising publicity.
