Supreme Court Rejects WFI's Appeal in Vinesh Phogat's Case

Supreme Court Rejects WFI's Appeal in Vinesh Phogat's Case

Post by : Shakul

The Supreme Court has ruled against an appeal from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), affirming a Delhi High Court decision that permitted wrestler Vinesh Phogat to take part in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games. This judgment essentially concludes the legal battle following the trials' conclusion.

Justices P.S. Narasimha and Aravind Kumar noted the appeal was rendered pointless since the selection trials had already occurred. With the event completed and participation fulfilled, the court found it unnecessary to continue examining the case.

Initially, the dispute arose after the Delhi High Court allowed Phogat to compete in the trials despite the WFI's protests. The federation then sought intervention from the Supreme Court to address questions of eligibility.

In its dismissal, the highest court clarified that this should not be seen as an endorsement of the Delhi High Court’s critical stance on the federation. The ruling hinged on the fact that the issue had become moot after the trials.

Despite the opportunity provided by the court’s order, Vinesh Phogat did not qualify from the selection trials, losing in the competition. Consequently, the core issues raised in the appeal were overtaken by the outcomes.

The decision reinforces the legal principle that courts will generally refrain from addressing disputes that lack a current controversy. Legal analysts emphasized that after the trials concluded, the relevance of the appeal diminished significantly.

This case drew notable attention from India's sports community amid ongoing discussions on wrestling governance and the processes for national selection. Although the Supreme Court's ruling resolves this specific challenge, debates surrounding transparency and management in Indian wrestling are expected to persist.
