SAG-AFTRA & Studios Forge New AI Guidelines for Actors

Post by : Shakul

The discussions surrounding artificial intelligence in Hollywood have advanced as SAG-AFTRA collaborates with major studios on a new labor contract. This agreement aims to bolster protections for actors amidst the rise of generative AI, learning from the pivotal 2023 actors' strike that highlighted these concerns.

After a series of labor disputes that affected many productions, union leaders report a more constructive dialogue with streaming companies and studios. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's chief negotiator, noted that both parties are now more inclined to seek effective solutions for the evolving technological landscape.

A key aspect of this agreement focuses on digital replicas. The proposed terms mandate informed consent and fair compensation whenever technology is utilized to recreate the image, voice, or likeness of living or deceased performers. This ensures that artists maintain authority over their identity as AI capabilities continue to advance.

Additionally, the contract addresses the use of characters generated entirely by AI. While it does not outright ban this practice, it introduces rigorous oversight measures. Production companies wanting to use AI-generated performers must provide significant justification for their use and consult with the union prior to implementation.

Industry analysts regard these new provisions as vital in achieving a balance between technological advancements and the rights of performers. The safeguards are intended to prevent studios from substituting human actors with AI counterparts without accountability, while still permitting creative experimentation.

The topic remains contentious among actors. While many feel more secure than they did during the 2023 strike, the sophistication of generative AI raises ongoing concerns. There is a widespread fear that these rapid advancements could jeopardize job security, creative rights, and long-term career paths in the entertainment field.

SAG-AFTRA represents around 160,000 professionals in film, television, and video gaming, positioning it as one of the foremost entertainment unions globally. Currently, members are casting votes on the agreement, which is set to conclude by June 4. Endorsement of the pact would prevent further major disruptions in the industry and establish a framework for navigating AI's future in Hollywood.
