Escalating Protests in Iran Result in Seven Fatalities Amid Economic Strife

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Protests triggered by Iran’s dire economic situation intensified on Thursday, spreading from the capital to rural regions and resulting in at least seven fatalities, as reported by Iranian officials. The deceased include both demonstrators and security personnel, marking the first confirmed deaths in this ongoing unrest.

The increasing violence hints at a potential escalation in government crackdowns. While protests have slowed in Tehran, unrest is escalating in provincial cities, particularly among the Lur ethnic communities.

Multiple Provinces Report Clashes

The most severe incidents occurred in Azna, situated in Lorestan province, approximately 300 kilometers southwest of the capital. Footage shared online depicted burning debris in the streets, gunfire reverberating through local neighborhoods, and protesters chanting anti-government slogans.

According to Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, three individuals were confirmed dead in Azna, although state media provided scant coverage of the violence. Journalists face significant risks, having been arrested during previous protest waves, complicating independent reporting.

Gunfire Reported as Protests Move South

In Lordegan, located in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, videos revealed crowds gathering amidst gunfire. Fars, citing an unofficial source, reported two deaths during the protests on Thursday.

The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran corroborated two demonstrator deaths in Lordegan, also releasing an image of an armed police officer in riot gear.

This area has a history of unrest, notably major protests in 2019 over allegations regarding contaminated medical supplies.

Deaths Reported Across Central Iran

State media confirmed a fatality in Fuladshahr, Isfahan province, during the protests. Activist groups have accused police of firing at demonstrators, although authorities refrained from further comment.

In a separate incident, a 21-year-old volunteer in the Basij paramilitary force linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard was killed in Kouhdasht, Lorestan. Officials attributed his death to “rioters” and noted injuries to at least 13 security personnel.

Officials Recognize Economic Issues

Local authorities admitted that the protests are primarily fueled by escalating inflation, the currency collapse, and worsening economic conditions. The Iranian rial has significantly fallen, with the dollar trading at around 1.4 million rials.

Officials urged citizens to remain calm, asserting the need to address public grievances thoughtfully while warning against attempts to exploit the protests.

Crackdown and Arrests

Iranian state television announced the arrest of seven individuals, some alleged to be connected to monarchist and opposition groups abroad. Security forces also reported seizing 100 smuggled handguns during various operations.

To curb protest enthusiasm, authorities declared a public holiday, citing inclement weather, coinciding with Iran’s weekend and additional religious observances.

Political Tensions Amid International Scrutiny

These protests emerge against a backdrop of heightened political tensions following a recent conflict with Israel and U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Tehran has claimed it has stopped uranium enrichment, signaling a willingness to negotiate to ease sanctions.

However, negotiations have stalled as U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issue continuing warnings regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
