Veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah has penned a moving homage to her long-standing friend and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai co-star Satish Shah, who died on October 25 after a sudden cardiac arrest. In her piece, she outlines his warmth, trademark humour and the last light-hearted note he sent — a message that now reads like a final, bittersweet joke.
A Parting Note That Stung
In a column for The Indian Express, Ratna detailed the last communication she received from Satish Shah. At 12:57 PM on October 25 he sent a WhatsApp: “I’m often mistaken for an adult because of my age.” She answered at 2:14 PM with a playful reply — “That’s just right for you!” — and within two hours, at 3:49 PM, producer JD Majethia rang with the crushing news that Satishbhai had passed away.
Ratna wrote that the initial reaction felt unreal, as if someone had staged an ill-timed prank. As reality set in, the loss became more devastating: a performer who embraced life, laughed through hardship and met setbacks with a smile was suddenly gone. Several friends reported receiving similarly cheerful messages from Satish earlier that day, which deepened the sense of shock.
Immediate Shock in the Sarabhai Circle
Members of the Sarabhai vs Sarabhai ensemble — including Sumeet Raghavan, Rajesh Kumar and JD Majethia — were reportedly stunned by the news, and their group chat rapidly filled with disbelief. Ratna reflected on how he remained spirited and engaging until his final hours, often using humour to lift those around him even when fatigued or unwell.
Clarifying the Cause
While some early accounts mentioned kidney-related issues, Rajesh Kumar later clarified that Satish Shah suffered a cardiac arrest at his Mumbai residence. Sources say he collapsed during lunch and was taken to hospital but could not be revived.
Satish Shah was 74. His funeral drew close family and colleagues from film and television, who remembered him for his genial nature and comic finesse.
Indravadan Sarabhai’s Cultural Footprint
Satish Shah’s Indravadan Sarabhai remains one of Indian television’s most cherished creations. Paired with Ratna Pathak Shah’s urbane Maya, his performance helped redefine the sitcom format in the early 2000s. The show’s subtle, character-driven humour continues to resonate through reruns and social media references.
Ratna described their collaboration as a sustained creative pleasure, noting his instinctive comedic timing and his ability to elevate scenes without dominating them.
Industry Homage and Public Remembrance
Messages of condolence poured in from across the entertainment community. Producer JD Majethia remembered Satish as the warm, witty figure he portrayed on screen; Sumeet Raghavan called him the emotional centre of the Sarabhai family. Actors such as Boman Irani, Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher also shared tributes, praising his professionalism and gentle humour.
A Career of Range and Resonance
Over more than four decades, Satish Shah appeared in over 200 films and numerous television projects. His credits include Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! — roles that secured his place in the annals of Indian entertainment.
Concluding her tribute, Ratna reflected on the particular lightness he brought to life: someone who could transform sorrow into laughter and make hardship more bearable for those around him. That quality, she wrote, is a rare gift that will be deeply missed.
As colleagues and fans revisit memorable scenes and one-liners, the convivial spirit of Indravadan Sarabhai endures — a testament to Satish Shah’s lasting impact on audiences across generations.
