Paraguay Reiterates Diplomatic Commitment to Taiwan Amidst Chinese Pressure

Post by : Shakul

In a strong show of allegiance, Paraguay has reiterated its diplomatic commitment to Taiwan, undeterred by China's escalating pressure to break ties with the self-governing island. President Santiago Peña emphasized Paraguay's unwavering support during an official engagement in Taipei, where he convened with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, coinciding with various diplomatic initiatives.

As the sole South American nation officially recognizing Taiwan, Paraguay stands among just 12 countries worldwide maintaining formal relations with Taipei. China's assertion of Taiwan as part of its territory has intensified its efforts to diplomatically isolate Taiwan in recent years, pushing allies to recognize Beijing instead. Alongside this diplomatic maneuvering, China's military activities around Taiwan have also escalated, prompting concerns about regional stability.

At a military honors event outside Taiwan’s presidential office, President Peña affirmed the importance of Paraguay's friendship and strategic alliance with Taiwan, highlighting shared democratic principles of freedom, democracy, and human rights that nourish their bond. He reiterated Paraguay’s dedication to supporting Taiwan’s role in the international arena and fostering deeper bilateral cooperation ahead.

In response, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te expressed gratitude for Paraguay's steadfast support amid growing international pressures from China. Lai remarked that the relationship continues to flourish based on deep political trust and expanding collaborative projects. The leaders later presided over the signing of multiple bilateral agreements, including one focused on investment in an artificial intelligence computing center.

This reaffirmation of ties came shortly after Chinese Official Lin Jian publicly encouraged Paraguay to achieve the "right side of history" by severing relations with Taiwan. Chinese representatives reiterated that the “One China” principle remains central to global diplomatic relations, citing that over 180 nations recognize Beijing over Taipei. Nonetheless, Paraguay has consistently upheld its stance, actively supporting Taiwan’s international presence.

During discussions, President Peña also underscored the principle that the Taiwanese people should freely make decisions rooted in democracy and equity. He criticized the exclusion of Taiwan from major global institutions, such as the United Nations, as unjust and detrimental to the credibility of those entities. This reflects Paraguay's unwavering commitment to promoting Taiwan's participation in global affairs despite significant opposition from Beijing.

As tensions regarding Taiwan escalate, China's ongoing efforts to diminish Taipei's diplomatic connections remain evident. Taiwan has suffered several losses in recent years, including the recent withdrawal of Honduras in 2023 for relations with China. Yet, Paraguay's recent statements underline that certain nations remain dedicated to fostering strong ties with Taiwan based on mutual political ideologies, economic partnerships, and long-standing strategic relations.
