In a significant diplomatic move, Pakistan has formally protested to Afghanistan following a grave suicide attack in Bannu district, which claimed the lives of 15 police officers and left many others hurt. Authorities in Pakistan have pointed fingers at the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), alleging the attackers were operating out of Afghan territory. This tragedy has further strained the already delicate relations between Islamabad and Kabul, with ongoing security issues plaguing their shared border.
On Monday, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry summoned a senior Afghan diplomat to express its official discontent regarding the incident. The ministry indicated that initial investigations and intelligence data suggested the attack was orchestrated by militants residing in Afghanistan. Officials from Pakistan have warned that they may take serious measures against those found culpable for this heinous act. Afghan officials have yet to respond to these grave accusations.
The violent incident unfolded late Saturday in Bannu district, located near the porous border with Afghanistan. Local law enforcement reported that a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle towards a police security post and detonated it. This explosion led to a fierce gun battle with armed assailants. Some officers were killed in the crossfire, while others succumbed to injuries from the building's collapse post-blast. At least four officers were confirmed injured in this attack.
Pakistani officials have claimed that a newly formed militant group known as Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan has taken responsibility for the bombing. Islamabad alleges a strong connection between this group and the Pakistani Taliban. The TTP is increasingly seen as a threat, having been implicated in a series of assaults on police forces, military personnel, and government sites over the years. Pakistan has consistently accused the Afghan Taliban of providing sanctuary to these militants, a claim that the Kabul administration has denied.
Moreover, another alarming security incident surfaced on Monday when a suspected militant accidentally detonated explosives after being questioned by a local resident in a remote village near the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border. Police reported that the resident, Mohammad Liaquat, grew suspicious of the unidentified man approaching a nearby security post and decided to interrogate him. This inquiry caused the suspect to panic and detonate the explosives, resulting in Liaquat’s death.
Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi commended Liaquat for his courage, noting that his quick thinking likely prevented further bloodshed. Describing him as a hero, the minister highlighted Liaquat's ultimate sacrifice to avert a larger catastrophe. Local community members echoed this sentiment, while security forces heightened patrols in the surrounding areas in the aftermath of the event.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated over recent months amid heightened militant activity and repeat border confrontations. Since February, numerous individuals have been affected by cross-border skirmishes and security measures. Despite recent peace discussions between Afghan Taliban representatives and Pakistani officials, facilitated by China, sporadic violence and distrust continue to hinder efforts for regional stability. Analysts express concern that the latest attack could further complicate ongoing diplomatic and security relationships between the neighboring nations.
