In celebration of Earth Day, Old Doha Port is spotlighting its significant environmental initiatives geared towards marine protection and effective waste management. These efforts are designed to safeguard the marine environment that underpins its operations, all in support of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the goals for sustainable tourism.
A major highlight is the annual Seabed Cleaning Initiative, now in its fourth year following its launch in 2023. This initiative unites professional divers, technical experts, governmental agencies, and private sector partners to clear the seabed, diving as deep as six meters. The clean-up focuses on eliminating plastics, discarded fishing nets, ropes, and other substantial marine debris that can endanger marine ecosystems and disrupt safe navigation.
Prior to each clean-up operation, comprehensive surveys identify areas requiring attention. All waste collected is meticulously sorted, with recyclable materials processed in partnership with specialized recyclers. This program also plays a vital role in enhancing public awareness regarding marine conservation and encouraging community involvement in safeguarding coastal waters.
Furthermore, Old Doha Port boasts an efficient marine pollution response framework. Equipped with specialized equipment such as floating barriers to contain oil spills, along with retrieval and treatment apparatus, trained emergency response teams are on standby for any crisis. Regular drills are conducted with relevant authorities, ensuring readiness for potential incidents.
The port also adheres to a stringent waste management system catering to all marine operations. This includes designated collection points for solid waste, sewage treatment facilities, and storage tanks designed for used oils. Strict prohibitions against discharging waste into the marina waters are enforced, with ongoing monitoring to ensure adherence to environmental regulations.
Through these combined efforts, Old Doha Port is enhancing its commitment to the preservation of marine ecosystems while fostering sustainable development in Qatar.
