Nissan Unveils Assisted Driving System with Wayve Tech

Nissan Motor Co. has commenced testing a new driver-assistance system utilizing technology developed by UK-based startup Wayve. This collaboration aims to enhance Nissan's ProPilot system, focusing on urban driving scenarios.

Advanced Features for Urban Driving

The prototype vehicles, based on Nissan's Ariya electric SUV, are equipped with 11 cameras, five radars, and one lidar sensor. These sensors enable the system to detect and respond to complex urban environments, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles. The system offers Level 2 autonomy, requiring drivers to remain attentive and ready to take control at any moment.

Wayve's Machine Learning Approach

Wayve's technology distinguishes itself by employing machine learning algorithms that learn from real-world driving data, rather than relying on pre-mapped information. This approach allows the system to adapt to diverse driving conditions and continuously improve its performance.

Expansion into the Japanese Market

Earlier this year, Wayve established a testing and development center in Japan, marking its first expansion into the Asian market. The center will support the deployment of the new driver-assistance system in Japan, with plans for a commercial launch in the 2027 fiscal year.

Future Outlook

Nissan's collaboration with Wayve represents a significant step forward in the development of autonomous driving technologies. By integrating advanced machine learning capabilities into its ProPilot system, Nissan aims to provide safer and more efficient driving experiences in urban environments.
