In the second ODI at Napier, New Zealand triumphed over West Indies by five wickets, thus taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The contest was altered to 34 overs per side due to inclement weather, but New Zealand successfully chased down a target of 248 runs with just three balls remaining, propelled by an impressive opening stand from Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra.
Starting their chase for 248, New Zealand soared ahead. Conway and Ravindra’s aggressive play yielded 106 runs for the first wicket, significantly undermining the West Indies’ bowling strategy. Conway tallied 90 runs while Ravindra added 56, both exhibiting an assertive pace that kept New Zealand firmly in control of the match.
The Windies faced difficulties after being prompted to bat first, with their top order faltering against New Zealand's bowlers. Kyle Jamieson emerged as the star bowler, taking three pivotal wickets for 44 runs, including crucial dismissals of John Campbell and Keacy Carty. The West Indies found themselves in a precarious situation at 86 for five in just 15.3 overs.
Despite early setbacks, Shai Hope shone for the West Indies, scoring a determined century — his 19th in ODIs — featuring 13 fours and four sixes. Together with contributions from Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd, he steered the West Indies to a respectable total of 247 runs for nine wickets.
New Zealand’s innings faced a momentary challenge. After Ravindra was dismissed in the 17th over, both Will Young and Mark Chapman fell quickly, and Conway left the crease in the 26th over with the score at 166-4. The required run rate was escalating, intensifying the suspense for the home crowd.
In the closing moments, Tom Latham (39 not out off 29 balls) and captain Mitchell Santner (34 not out off 15 balls) steadied the ship. They expertly navigated the remaining runs, keeping tensions at bay. The match reached a thrilling climax when seven runs were needed from the last five balls. A no-ball from Jayden Seales allowed Latham to score a boundary, while Santner sealed the match with a superb cover drive.
Post-match, Shai Hope expressed admiration for his team despite the loss, stating, “We’ve been pushing the game to the end, and it’s only a matter of time before we succeed. To become a great team, winning against the best is essential.”
With this victory, New Zealand has secured the series with one match remaining. The two teams will meet again for the third ODI on Saturday, followed by a three-Test showdown starting December 2. New Zealand’s performance in Napier showcased the significance of teamwork and resilience in chasing down challenging totals, while the West Indies aim to bounce back in the final game to avoid a series sweep.
