More than two decades after Tobey Maguire first assumed the role of Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s 2002 film, screenwriter Mattson Tomlin has indicated he would consider writing a new feature that revisits Maguire’s Peter Parker. Tomlin, who is also a co-writer on The Batman: Part II, outlined a concept that frames the character in a different life stage.
Tomlin’s Concept: An Older, Family-Centered Peter Parker
Responding on X (formerly Twitter) to a fan question about his engagement with the Spider-Man franchise, Tomlin described the direction he would favour.
“My primary interest right now would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is managing life as a husband and a father,” he wrote.
He added that portraying Spider-Man as a parent appeals to him, particularly after the recent cycle of Spider-Man films.
“I’m drawn to the idea of Spider-Man as a father, given the trajectory of the last eight films,” Tomlin noted.
Those comments have renewed public discussion about Maguire’s future in the franchise, especially after his high-profile return in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which brought together three cinematic iterations of the character.
Development Status: Uncertain but Not Ruled Out
Asked whether any concrete steps toward a Spider-Man 4 were underway, Tomlin offered a cautious reply, stressing the complexities involved.
“Slow and steady wins the race… There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven’t gotten a ‘no’ yet!”
No official confirmation has come from Tobey Maguire or Sam Raimi. Still, Tomlin’s remarks have prompted speculation about either a continuation of Raimi’s original trilogy or a fresh, standalone narrative within the broader Spider-Verse that centres on a seasoned Peter balancing family responsibilities with heroism.
Meanwhile: Tom Holland’s Brand New Day
While debate over Maguire’s possible comeback continues, the MCU will advance with Tom Holland headlining Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release on July 31, 2026. Zendaya returns as MJ, and Holland has described the film as a reset for his iteration of the character after the events of No Way Home.
Tomlin’s Ongoing Work
Tomlin remains a prominent voice in contemporary superhero cinema; besides his interest in Spider-Man, he is attached to The Batman: Part II, directed by Matt Reeves and set for October 2027. Given his profile, any expressed interest in reviving Maguire’s Spider-Man could influence studio conversations, particularly if fan demand persists.
At present, no official announcement confirms a Tobey Maguire-led project. Nevertheless, Tomlin’s public comments have rekindled audience interest in the possibility of seeing Maguire’s Peter Parker return as an older, family-oriented Spider-Man.
Whether that materialises as a direct sequel, a new entry in the Spider-Verse, or another multiversal collaboration remains uncertain, but the discussion underscores the continued commercial and creative appetite for the character across generations.
