In a series of coordinated assaults on Saturday, gunmen struck several key locations across Mali, including the capital Bamako and other significant cities. The air was filled with the sound of heavy gunfire and explosions as security forces mounted a response.
Malian military sources confirmed that unknown armed groups targeted crucial installations, including military barracks and strategic points within Bamako. A particular focus of the violence was near Modibo Keita International Airport, where locals and reporters noted sustained gunfire and helicopter activity, given its proximity to a military air base.
In response, army troops were promptly deployed to confront and neutralize the attackers.
Additional reports indicated violence across other regions of the nation. In Kati, a town adjacent to Bamako that hosts Mali’s principal military base and the residence of its military leader, residents experienced intense gunfire and explosions early in the day.
Witnesses in the northeastern cities of Kidal and Gao also reported firearm exchanges and explosions. A former Kidal mayor stated that armed fighters entered parts of the city, resulting in armed conflict with government forces, while in Gao, the intensity of the blasts was said to rattle buildings and generate panic among civilians.
A representative for the Azawad Liberation Front claimed via social media that their forces had captured multiple regions in Kidal and Gao, although this assertion remains unverified.
The U.S. Embassy in Bamako issued a security alert regarding the gunfire and explosions reported near Kati and the airport. It advised American nationals to stay indoors and refrain from movement until further notice.
Mali has been grappling with persistent violence tied to armed factions affiliated with al-Qaida and the Islamic State, alongside ongoing separatist movements in the north. Security situations have deteriorated in Mali and surrounding nations like Burkina Faso and Niger, despite international and regional interventions.
