Macron Warns Against ‘Survival of the Fittest’ in World Politics

Post by :

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a strong message to world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly, urging nations not to adopt a "survival of the fittest" approach in international relations. He highlighted the dangers of selfishness and domination by a few powerful countries, warning that this attitude could threaten global peace and stability.

Addressing the assembly, Macron emphasized that the complexity of today’s world is no reason to abandon principles and shared ambitions. He called for restoring the spirit of cooperation that had guided nations 80 years ago, pointing out that the current international system must protect fairness and prevent domination by the strongest.

Macron also defended France’s recent international actions. He explained his support for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict with Russia and the recognition of a Palestinian state, which he had announced just a day earlier. He said France takes these steps because it opposes double standards and believes in supporting nations fairly. "France will stand side by side with Ukraine, as we do for peace in the Middle East," Macron stated.

In his speech, Macron did not ignore U.S. President Donald Trump’s earlier criticisms of the United Nations. While Trump had harshly attacked the organization, Macron highlighted that those who criticize the UN most are often the ones seeking to change global rules to assert their own dominance.

Interestingly, Macron also acknowledged a positive development from Trump regarding Ukraine. For the first time, Trump indicated that Ukraine might not only reclaim its lost territory but could possibly achieve even more with NATO’s help. Macron welcomed this view, noting that it was encouraging to see the U.S. President express confidence in Ukraine's capabilities.

Macron’s speech comes at a time when international relations are marked by tension and uncertainty. Conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and the Middle East, combined with criticisms of global institutions, have made cooperation between nations more important than ever. By calling for fairness, mutual respect, and collaboration, Macron sought to remind the world that global challenges can only be met through unity rather than selfishness.

He concluded with a strong appeal: nations must reject domination by the strongest and instead work together to build a stable and fair international order. Macron’s message was clear — global problems require collective action, not the triumph of the fittest.

This address to the UN General Assembly reinforced France’s commitment to international diplomacy, highlighting both its support for Ukraine against aggression and its stand for peace in the Middle East. The speech also underscored a broader concern among global leaders: ensuring that the rules of the international system are upheld to prevent any single country from imposing its will unfairly on others.
