Dubai, UAE – January 2026: DP World has launched the Dubai Food District, marking a significant transformation of the Al Aweer Central Fruit and Vegetable Market into one of the world’s foremost food trade hubs.
Set to unfold in phases, the project will begin its first phase in 2027, significantly enlarging the market to 29 million square feet. This hub will cater to diverse food trade categories, aiming to bolster food supply chains, enhance trade capacity, and ensure regional food security.
The new infrastructure will merge trade, storage, processing, and distribution within a unified ecosystem. Facilities will include cold storage, temperature-regulated warehouses, primary and secondary processing units, tech-driven back-office solutions, and a gourmet food hall tailored for businesses and consumers alike.
Originally introduced in July 2024 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai Food District will expand offerings beyond fruits and vegetables, incorporating dairy, gourmet foods, essentials, and specialty items, further positioning Dubai as a central hub for global food trade.
Since its inception in 2004, the Al Aweer Market has catered to over 2,500 traders, distributing fresh produce throughout the UAE and beyond. The Dubai Food District will enhance Al Aweer’s pivotal role in the food ecosystem while improving efficiency, variety, and market responsiveness, thereby minimizing risks in the supply chain for businesses.
His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, remarked:
"The Dubai Food District fortifies Dubai’s position in food trade, combining world-class infrastructure and global connectivity with advanced logistics in a single venue. We’re empowering farmers, producers, and traders to enter new markets swiftly, efficiently, and sustainably."
Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director of DP World GCC, emphasized:
"With escalating global food demand and pressured supply chains, the Dubai Food District is a vital investment. It will fuel trade-driven innovation and yield lasting economic benefits."
The strategic placement of the district facilitates multimodal connectivity, linking producers and traders to over 20 international markets through DP World’s logistics network. This infrastructure aims to render supply chains agile, secure, and economical, allowing businesses of all sizes to explore new market opportunities.
DP World will showcase the Dubai Food District at Gulfood 2026, located at Gulfood Fresh and Logistics, North Hall 12, stand GG.H2.
